Also got hit with the softlock while streaming to Twitch and decided to frame it as unlocking an Endless Mode you never intended. And then got softlocked again during the treasure section by the treasure hunter dying in the only place to exit the room.
Loved the concept and the twist.
Maybe as a potential fix you could make it so any blocks that are on the screen can be chosen for the next piece? That would make it much harder to softlock somewhere.
This was a Ludum Dare game, so it was made on a serious time crunch and there were a lot of small issues I didn't anticipate, especially the soft-lock block on the last boss that people keep running into. I do like the "pick blocks from on-screen" solution, though. It would be an interesting approach, but would probably require some huge restructuring of the levels.
Also, looks like you ran into a really unexpected bug when objects stopped appearing on that boss fight. I'm guessing it's when you matched with the wall and created a hole, and the right laser kept shooting off the left side of the screen. I didn't have any safeguards against that, since the lasers are all either supposed to hit walls or scroll off the top and be destroyed, so it kept accumulating laser objects until it hit the object limit. First time I've seen something like that, haha!
I only realized that it was a Ludum Dare game after having played it to completion and leaving my comment. You made something fantastic and I don't regret my time playing.
Happy to provide you with some joy by breaking the game in a way you didn't intend.
In a flooded market, with gamers that have been playing for 40+ years you have achieved something special here: Surprise. thank you for the awesome creative rejuvenation of a genre.
That truely was insane! I was working on a match 3 game and was looking for inspiration, and saw something that looked like Columns on of my best time ever games for SegaMegadrive here in the UK... I had no idea there was a twist HAHA I was like "WHAAAAAAAAT" Just fantastic!
Gameplay was fantastic, ambient is awesome, arcade musics and style is very addictive and perfect final level! It was so great! Won the game by making 33996 point!
Ohh this was great, so many little details to explore! I got stuck in the last challenge and played it for hours before realizing it had a bug (a block that didn't exist in that level was blocking the red orb). Had to restart and finished it in a couple of seconds after that.
From the moment I realized what was really going on until the end my mouth was open, hard to believe this idea came to existence. Congratulations, that’s a well deserved award!
I'm gonna be honest with you, at first I was wondering "How did this game win the LD48? What's so special about it?"... How naïve I was... Now I know! Ahahahah
The first 4-5 minutes of gameplay are quite standard... Groups of blocks fall from the sky and you just have to stack them correctly to score points, nothing fancy here... But then, the game takes a complete twist! It just kept me glued to the screen throughout the entire game!! I really wanted to know what was hidden at the bottom! :D
Really, really good job for 3 days of work, you deserve all the awards 👏👏👏

Holy crap. Amazing!

Ha, oh no! Sorry about that!

Cheers!
Any chance of a Linux version?
I’m on ubuntu 20.04 on a thinkpad and it worked great for me - try sudo apt install wine, open the game folder in terminal, type wine fallumns
I honestly don't remember why I originally downloaded it, but I tried it out and thought "wow, cute column clone" and then I got to the twist
This was great. Amazing work and excellent music choices.

thank you for the awesome creative rejuvenation of a genre.
This was amazing, though I have never seen flicker this much under Wine.
What a trip
I also had the bug that prevented me from finishing, but after a restart, no problem. Clever rework of a classic concept.

heyy this was really smart and fun! I would play a whole game that progressed like this even if it wasnt a twist I think!
In love with this game. Big fan of Columns and all the places you went with it. I want to game jam with you!
Amazing idea, amazing execution.
"Had the most depth", lol, amazing.
this game needs a number 2!

Man, this game was fantastic. Easily one of the better puzzle games I've ever played - and that's including Columns and Columns II!
Ohh this was great, so many little details to explore!

Good job!
ahhh, I think I have the same problem. no wonder I've been stuck for 40 minutes!
How did you make this game? Can you share the source code?
Fantastic! Great twist with clever use of the theme.

I like the premise of the game, but can you upload the game for play on the web browser?
I was expecting just a Columns clone and then it took me by surprise with the twist XD This was a really fun experience.
Such a great and innovative gameplay experience! Hope you keep working on it, it gave me serious "There is No Game" vibes!
No way, this is SO fun ahahah

Loved this game, so clever and yet filled with helpful things to keep the player winning! Also amazing music :) Congrats on winning Ludem Dare 48!
27359! Congratulations with the #1 Overall!
haha, brilliant <3
